Rep. Morgan Introduces Anti-Weaponization Fund Tax Act to Prevent Illinois Residents from Profiting Off Trump’s Taxpayer-Funded Slush Fund
Legislation imposes a 100% tax on any Illinois resident who receives a payout from the DOJ’s controversial $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.”
Springfield, IL – State Representative Bob Morgan today announced the introduction of HB5794, the Anti-Weaponization Fund Tax Act, legislation that would impose a 100 percent tax on any compensation an Illinois resident receives from the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” established by the United States Department of Justice as part of its settlement agreement in Trump v. Internal Revenue Service.
“Trump has gone too far with illegal slush funds for his allies in Washington,” said Illinois State Representative Bob Morgan. “With no Congressional approval and no oversight, those who stormed the Capitol and tried to overturn a free and fair election will now have access to nearly two billion dollars in public money, all at the taxpayers’ expense. The Oval Office is not a personal ATM, and taxpayer dollars are not a reward for loyalty to Donald Trump.”
Last week, the Department of Justice announced the creation of the $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, established as part of a settlement in a civil lawsuit brought by President Trump against the Internal Revenue Service over leaked tax documents. The fund is designed to compensate individuals who claim they were “wronged” by the federal government. Critics have widely condemned the fund as a politically motivated slush fund, with those in line to collect including individuals prosecuted for attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election and hundreds of participants in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.
Under the Anti-Weaponization Fund Tax Act, any Illinois resident who receives a payout from the fund would be required to pay a tax to the Illinois Department of Revenue equal to 100 percent of that compensation within 30 days of receipt. All proceeds collected under the Act would be deposited directly into the Illinois General Revenue Fund, returning any such payout to the public rather than allowing it to benefit those who attacked American democracy.
“Springfield has a responsibility to fight back against the insanity coming from DC. If you’re one of Trump’s allies trying to once again grift the taxpayer, my legislation will course-correct the illegal behavior coming from the White House,” Morgan said.
