State Rep. Bob Morgan calls for Illinois to lead on gun reform

HIGHWOOD, IL- Today, State Representative Bob Morgan released the following statement after the horrific mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Illinois – Now is the time to act on common sense gun safety laws.

The Illinois legislature will be returning to the Capitol for a fall session in October. We must hold votes on:

1) Banning assault weapons;
2) Improving our firearm owners identification system and closing loopholes; and
3) Other measures that protect our communities from this domestic terrorism, that address mental health funding, that ensures guns are kept out of the hands of those wishing to harm others.

Within 13 hours, shooters in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio used semi-automatic rifles to kill 29 people and injure 52 others.Washington has failed us repeatedly. Nothing but thoughts and prayers following Sandy Hook, or Pulse Nightclub, or Parkland, or the other hundreds of mass shootings. They have prioritized NRA support over public safety.

The El Paso shooter was obsessed with a “Hispanic Invasion”. President Trump will continue to inflame the situation – he’s called Mexicans “rapists” and minority communities “infested”, while saying there were good people among the white supremacists at Charlottesville.

Recently, I have been proud of the willingness of Illinois’ leaders to take bold action on issues like reproductive health, civil rights and criminal justice. We must act boldly now.
